Josef Hoflehner

Josef Hoflehner

Josef Hoflehner was born in Austria in 1955 and well known for his black and white, in 2007 he was voted Nature photographer of the year. His work is renowned throughout America and Europe and has been regularly exhibited with including his well known "Jet Airliner" Project. Shot in black and white Josef used 6x6 film for most of his images.

The two images above show the plane as almost suspended above the people below also showing scale and power. I think black and white suit the images well.

Reach up for the sunrise

I love the simplicity of this next image. Fabulous use of slow shutter speed.

This last image is one of my favorites probably slightly underexposed with effect this slow shutter speed image is a gem in my eyes.

My thoughts.
Once again i`ve been blown away with these images, I especially am with his superb use of shutter speed and black and white film, I want to meet this guy!

Joe Cornish

Joe Cornish

Cornish is a modern day photographer  working on landscape photography, his noticeable contributions are included in more than 30 travel books. His most recent work has be with the national trust.

Joe moved to North Yorkshire in 1993. After a decade shooting 35mm and 6x6 film, in 1995 he started working with a Horseman SW 612 wide-angle camera. After another year he switched to 5x4. It was a move that allowed Joe to develop the style that characterises his work today. With friends Joni and Joe Essex, Joe started Joegraphic in 1999, publishing cards and calendars. Starting in Stokesley, the acquisition of Register House in Northallerton in 2004 led to the formation of Joe Cornish Galleries.

Wild Stillness

I love this kind of image it gives an almost timeless and lonely feel to the image. The tree stands alone and is a survivor in a way with the lack of trees around, the clouds give a harshness to the environment.

I love the colour and tonal range in this image.

Millennium bridge, Sunset
Millennium Bridge, sunset

This image is a great example of what I like to photograph, sunset gives an extra colour quality not
found during the middle of the day. I also love the way he`s positioned the camera so that the reflection of the bridge follows the contours of the hand rail.

The Flow of Light

This is an example of Joe`s use of slow shutter with great effect, using the rocks to lead the eye into the mountains beyond.

My thoughts.
I really love this Joe`s work and hope to achieve levels of excellence as he has and go to some of the most beautiful parts of the country.

Andreas Gursky

Andreas Gursky

Andreas Gursky is a German visual artist known for his large format architecture and landscape color photographs, often employing a high point of view

Gursky received strong training and influence from his teachers Hilla and Bernd Becher, a photographic team known for their distinctive, dispassionate method of systematically cataloging industrial machinery and architecture.

Gursky is also famous for producing the first and second most expensive image ever sold.
The image below, Rhein II sold at auction for 4.4 million dollars breaking his own record of
3.3 million for 99cents.

Rhein II.

99 cents.

My thoughts.

I like Andreas use of geometric shapes and fine detail in his images, it really shows the full potential of using large format cameras, although I`m at a loss to why his images sell for such a high price.

Country walks - Lymm

Country walks - Lymm

Carrying on with my landscape brief i`ve switched my efforts to Cheshire, in this case Lymm, a small village close to Warrington and Altrincham not far from where I live. Lymm offers ample opportunity for taking images weather its around the Dam or the old church or in the historic town itself these images below were taken around the dam, a lake aprox. 30 acres surrounded by mature woodland walks, a must for anyone interested in wildlife and nature.

The image above I really like although i`m not sure weather i should deal with the blown sky at the top, I`m open to criticism on this one.

One rainy day in Manchester

One rainy day in Manchester

Just a few images from a wet and windy October day in Manchester.
Using my skills and being slightly out of my comfort zone I snapped away hoping for a few images that would add a human element to my image collection although I found it difficult not to point my camera at every piece of architecture that came into view.

My thoughts.

Although this was a terrible day... weather-wise, i`m glad i did the exercise, photographing people was more fun than i thought it would be, the weather certainly turned the cards against us, but at the same time gave us images that were more interesting than if the sun was shining.
Ps. Sorry Georgia I had to include this image i thought it was one of the best from the day. Not the one above i have updated my blog since then , nice all the same but out of focus, nice d.o.f maybe next time.

White balance

White balance

Abbreviated as WB, white balance is a function of a digital camera used to compensate for different colors of light being emitted by different light sources. In digital photography the term is generally used to describe a function of a digital camera that allows you to calibrate the device to correctly display the color white. Once this calibration has been done, the camera should then display other colors correctly as well.
White balance is measured in Kelvins which is the temperature of the light for example the cooler the light such as a tungsten bulb emits cooler light mostly in the yellow or orange range where as sunlight emits a hotter light at the blue and white end of the spectrum.

Below are some images of the same subject but with each one i`ve changed only the white balance setting.

Daylight approx. 5200k

Shade approx. 7000k

Cloudy approx 6000k

Tungsten approx. 3200k

Fluorescent Approx. 4000k.

Custom white balance is also available on most DSLR`s giving you flexibility in mixed lighting situations.
Also available to purchase are grey cards which will give your camera a good idea of the light temperature.

Salford visions project: Salford Quays

Salford Quays

With the newly arrived BBC and the existing regenerated quays this is a great opportunity to take images and include them in my portfolio.
